BERU develops new intelligent ignition and diagnosis system for oil and gas heaters to production maturity

The BERU AG corporation, based in Ludwigsburg, Germany, supplies European heating manufacturers with complete ignition modules. A new standardized ignition and diagnosis system is now helping manufacturers to cut costs and application expenditure.

(Ludwigsburg, 10th March 2005) Heaters and cars are subject to ever more stringent emissions regulations. Manufacturers are attempting to meet those requirements by a range of measures including continuous optimisation of the combustion process. Beru's many years of technical experience and know-how in the heating ignition business have made it a key partner to the European oil and gas fired boiler industry in the development of emissions-optimised ignition systems.

Know-how transfer from the automotive business

One of Beru's latest innovations in this field is its new ignition and diagnosis system (BZDS). This is a revolutionary design, utilizing synergies from the BERU automotive business. Instead of additional, space-consuming sensors, the BERU developers use only existing components and a modified igniter. In addition to its flame detection feature, the system will in future also permit regulated combustion. This is beneficial to the environment, users can save money, and the installation and set-up work is reduced. The BERU developers also paid great attention to providing optimum user and service friendliness with the new igniter. It is scheduled to go into production in the beginning of 2006.

High-tech in development and production

BERU ignition systems consist of electronic igniters, ignition electrodes, ignition cables, sensors and protective caps, connectors, stops and interference suppressors. The system components are assembled on state-of-the-art machinery, and are optimally matched in terms of operational safety, energy consumption, durability and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC).

The BERU head office location in Ludwigsburg has a new hall specially designed for EMC testing of boilers and complete units. State-of-the-art equipment, allied to the company's decades of experience in ignition system interference suppression, permits any sources of interference to be quickly and permanently eliminated based on testing of individual components or complete systems. In order to meet the high technical and quality demands of Beru's partners in the European heating industry at all times, the company has also installed facilities including state-of-the-art test rigs for endurance testing of ignition systems.

Beru's development partners in the oil and gas heater industry also profit from the Ludwigsburg ignition specialist's automotive know-how when it comes to insulators for ignition and ionisation electrodes. The ceramic injection technique enables BERU to produce even the most complex geometric shapes and integrate them into an electrode block. That saves space, improves operational safety and reduces assembly costs.
