World novelty Ultra X Titan: Innovative spark plugs in a workshop-based range
High-tech-petrol engines need high-tech spark plugs: The new BERU Ultra X Titan sets standards in performance, durability and fuel utilisation.
(Ludwigsburg, 8 September 2008) Workshop professionals know the newest trends in engine manufacturing: State-of-the-art petrol cars become more and more compact and provide a better performance by charging. Logical consequence: With the combustion chamber requirements, the spark plug requirements rise as well. Werner Niessner, Manager of the BERU spark plug development in Ludwigsburg, puts it in a nutshell: "The higher the pressure in the combustion chamber, the higher is the voltage demand of the ignition spark for a safe ignition of the fuel-air-mix."
BERU Ultra X Titan: All new electrode design
In this area BERU Ultra X Titan enters a new dimension: For a highly-effective combustion, several innovative design features are combined. The Poly-J-type electrode of the new Ultra X developed by BERU, for instance, is made of a nickel-titanium alloy, highly resistant to erosion. Together with the all new design, this results in an extremely safe ignition with an optimum fuel utilisation. The progressive profile of the J-type electrode consists of five V-edges which are actuated in turn by the spark. "This way we use the electric point effect and thus need a smaller break-through voltage", explains spark plug developer Niesser.
The titanium electrode, highly resistant to erosion, combined with a tapered platinum ignition tip of the center electrode, ensures a long-time constant, reliable ignition performance with optimised fuel utilisation, guarantees compliance with the required emission values and an excellent cold start performance. Another advantage of the BERU world novelty: A clearly better durability with a runtime of up to 60,000 kilometers. With this, the maintenance demands of the car manufacturers are not only fulfilled to the full extent, but even exceeded clearly most of the time.
Another guarantee for a safe ignition is the utilisation of the so-called corona discharge. It prevents, as volitional pre-discharge between the center electrode and the insulator nose tip, a shunt between high voltage and earth. This could otherwise occur during the start, caused by conductive soot. In connection with the thin, cylindrical insulator nose tip the engine is able to start reliably even under the most difficult conditions: For instance at extremely low temperatures or after several short distance trips.
BERU Ultra X Titan: The best up-to-date product line in the business
With nine new Ultra X Titan types BERU updates the successful Ultra X series technically to the state of the art. "The repair market is subject to permanent change", explains spark plug developer Niessner. "As one of the worldwide leading spark plug manufacturers, we are in constant dialogue with car manufacturers and integrated into the development of new technologies right from the start. We use this know-how for our spark plug line of products."
This means: Ultra X becomes Ultra X Titan - the best up-to-date spark plug range in the business. The new BERU Ultra X product line consists of altogether 15 different types: Six of the well-proven Ultra X spark plugs plus nine new spark plugs. Together they form the new Ultra X titan product line. In the nine new Ultra X Titan types, the J-type electrode in Ploy-V form is unipolar.
For the six well-proven Ultra X spark plugs, BERU has kept the X-form and enhances the resistance to erosion with the new titanium-alloy in the earth electrodes. Karl-Heinz Gerescher, BERU Manager Sales and Marketing: "With this highly-developed range of products, BERU offers a big inspection potential to the workshops. To reach nearly 90 percent market coverage, only 15 spark plug types of the Ultra X Titan series are necessary. A manageable volume with which every workshop can build up stocks easily."
The new Ultra X Titan range of products will be available in Germany from September 2008 under the new abbreviated designation UXT 1 to UXT 15 in new, optimized packaging; on the export markets from January 2009. The six previous Ultra X plugs without titanium electrodes (abbreviated designation: UX) will also be on the market during the switchover phase.
