Leadership through sustainability: Automechanika singles out BERU AG for its environmental innovation

With the entry in the visitors’ guide to the environment, The Green Directory, BERU ranks among the selected Automechanika exhibitors with its especially low-emission products.

(Ludwigsburg, 11 September 2008) The visitors’ guide to the environment, The Green Directory, is appearing for the first time at Automechanika 2008: a “green“ signpost to selected exhibitors with especially sustainable and low-emission technologies, products and services. Only 25 products out of a total of approx. 4,600 eligible Automechanika exhibitors had en entry in the guide to the environment: in the “Parts“ category this includes the intelligent pressure sensor glow plug PSG from BERU AG in Ludwigsburg. The pressure sensor glow plug is a key component in the reduction of NOx and CO2 emissions and enables extremely precise control of the combustion processes in the Diesel engine. This saves fuel and protects the environment. Visitors can obtain The Green Directory from the information stands at the fair and, since the beginning of September, also as a download from the Internet.

At the forefront of Automechanika 2008, specialists from the Fraunhofer Institute for System and Innovation Research ISI, which assesses amongst other things the applications for the BDI environmental prize, evaluated 73 submitted products and services from a total of 55 companies in Germany and abroad according to their innovation and environmental performance. Criteria were the contribution to climate protection, efficient use of energy, reduction in particulate or sound emissions as well as the efficient use of raw materials.

BERU AG: Innovation for less emissions

The pressure sensor glow plug PSG, which has already won several awards, is only one of numerous BERU products which contribute to the reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions and therefore to protection of the environment. The directly measuring BERU Tire Pressure Control System TSS supports the driver to maintain the correct tire pressure. Inspections reveal that every third car is currently being driven with tires at the wrong air pressure, as tires gradually lose from three to six percent pressure per month and, without TSS, this loss of pressure goes unnoticed by the driver. If, for example, the tire pressure is reduced by 0.6 bar, specialists state that a car will consume up to four percent more fuel; also the service life of the tires will be reduced by up to 45 percent. According to an investigation by the FIA foundation in cooperation with the tire manufacturer Bridgestone, about eight billion liters of fuel are wasted worldwide every year. This corresponds to an additional CO2 load of 18.4 million tons.

The BERU Instant Start System (ISS) ensures reduced emissions when the Diesel engine is cold-started. Even at extremely low temperatures, down to minus 25 degrees Celsius, the Diesel quick start system guarantees an “SI engine like“ key start, stable neutral, clean load assumption, reduced emission of pollutants and lower fuel consumption.
