BERU Pressure Sensor Glow Plug PSG wins the renowned Automotive News PACE Award 2009
Key component for reduced NOx and CO2 emissions revolutionizes combustion technology in diesel engines.
Ludwigsburg, 22 May 2009 – The Pressure Sensor Glow Plug PSG from BERU has won the renowned Automotive News PACE Award 2009 in the “European Products” category. BERU has therefore beaten several hundred competitors to win the competition announced by the Automotive News, Ernst & Young and the Transportation Research Center Inc.
“With this award the international professional world once again acknowledges the leading role played by BERU in the area of environmentally friendly innovations for modern diesel engines”, rejoices Dr. Thomas Waldhier, Chairman of the Ludwigsburg specialists for ignition technology, diesel cold start technology, electronics and sensor mechanisms. “As a development partner in the automotive industry, BERU, the principal supplier of the PSG, has brought a future technology to the point of production, enabling the combustion processes in diesel engines to be controlled highly efficiently and precisely. For this reason the PSG is also one of the key components for reducing NOx and CO2 emissions.”
The intelligent pressure sensor glow plug supplies the exact and long-term stable pressure signals, required to set up a closed-loop control, from the engine combustion chamber. The PSG consists of the robust heating rod from the BERU ISS Diesel Instant Start System and a piezo-resistive sensor which cyclically records the quickly changing pressure in the combustion chamber and passes on this information to the engine’s control electronics. This enables NOx emissions, as the PACE jurors stated, “to be reduced as soon as they occur, i.e. during the combustion process, and not only subsequently.” To achieve strict exhaust gas standards, such as Euro 6, Tier2 or Bin 5, only compact waste gas aftertreatment systems are required thanks to the PSG, even in larger diesel engines. Consequence: lighter, less expensive vehicles which consume even less fuel: “a breakthrough for protection of the environment and a new era in diesel combustion technology.” In addition the PSG enables optimum monitoring of emissions over the entire service life of the engine.
The Automotive News PACE Award – PACE stands for Premier Automotive Suppliers’ Contribution to Excellence – has been awarded for the past 15 years for outstanding innova-tions from automotive suppliers. An independent jury selects the winners. The jurors on site at BERU in Ludwigsburg were satisfied by the technical competence of the company. The prize winners were announced in Detroit on 20 April 2009. In the “Products” category Morse Tec, a member of the BorgWarner Inc. like BERU, received the award for its cam torque actuated cam shaft phase adjuster system. “On account of our passion for innovations we are developing pioneering technologies at BorgWarner to reduce fuel consumption and pollutant emissions and to improve vehicle performance”, explains Timothy M. Manganello, Chairman and CEO of BorgWarner Inc. “That we were able to win two PACE Awards this year as well as the Automotive News PACE Innovation Partnership Award for cooperation with Ford, once again proves the technological leadership of the BorgWarner Inc. in the drive and waste gas train areas.”
