BERU PSG takes podium place at ÖkoGlobe 2009

The high-caliber jury awarded a prize to the pressure sensor glow plug in the first awards given on purely ecological grounds in the automotive and mobility industry.

Ludwigsburg, 22 October 2009 - The PSG (Pressure Sensor Glow Plug) by BERU took second place in the “Supplier Innovation” category at the renowned ÖkoGlobe Awards ceremony 2009. The ceremony for the only awards in the automotive and mobility industry to consider exclusively ecological criteria was held in September at the Cologne Headquarters of DEVK Insurance. Dr. Georg Rixecker, Pressure Sensor Glow Plug Development Manager, accepted the award on behalf of BERU. “This top classification once again confirms the leadership in innovation shown by our company in developing and producing environmentally-friendly technologies for modern Diesel engines,” said Rixecker. “With the pressure-sensor glow plug BERU is the first supplier to series manufacture this pioneering technology which controls the combustion processes inside Diesel aggregates extremely efficiently and accurately,” explained Dr. Ing. Thomas Waldhier, Chairman of BERU. “With the PSG as the key component and together with further innovations, BERU is concentrating on control and regulation on the power train, with the aim of reducing NOx and CO2 emissions.”

The intelligent BERU PSG supplies the exact and long-term stable pressure signals, required to set up a closed-loop control, from the engine combustion chamber. It consists of the robust heating rod from the BERU ISS Diesel Instant Start System and a piezo-resistive sensor which cyclically records the quickly changing pressure in the combustion chamber and passes this information to the engine’s control electronics. It enables the NOX emissions to be reduced during the combustion process, and not afterwards. In order to meet strict exhaust gas standards such as Euro 6, or Tier2 Bin5, with the BERU PSG the exhaust treatment systems can be smaller - even on large Diesel aggregates. The consequence: lighter, more economical cars, which, moreover, consume less fuel. Furthermore, with the PSG it is possible to monitor emis-sions throughout the entire service life of the engine.

ÖkoGlobe 2009 was the third occasion on which prizes for pioneering new products have been awarded in the mobility sector. Besides high-ranking company representatives, participants included scientists from CAR - Center Automotive Research at the University of Duisburg-Essen, headed by Professor Ferdinand Dudenhöffer, the internationally celebrated energy scientist, Professor Claudia Kempfert of DIW Berlin, top managers from TÜV Rheinland, and from DEVK Insurance, along with action artist H.A. Schult.
