Tips on Fitting
What you should pay attention to when fitting spark plugs

First: check type marking and thermal value!

Important on fitting spark plugs: a look at the type number. This provides information on the thermal value, thread length and sealing seat.

If spark plugs with an incorrect thermal value, thread length or sealing seat are fitted, in the majority of cases there are serious consequences for the engine, its operating behaviour and the spark plug itself. For this reason: ensure that you use the correct type when replacing spark plugs. Each original BERU brand spark plug carries an unmistakable type marking. This provides information on the thermal value, thread length and sealing seat.

Second: Screwing In

This is best done using the practical BERU spark plug assembly aids (available in specialized trade). They enable the spark plugs to be screwed in and out reliably and carefully, while also avoiding any burns or injuries to the hands, as well as preventing any thread destruction caused by inserting then at an angle.

The versatile ZMH 001 spark plug assembly aid.

The ZMH 002 spark plugs assembly aid prevents any tilting, especially in deep spark plug installation shafts.

Our tip

Spark plug connector grease (ZKF 001)
helps avoid voltage flashovers

Problem: After replacing the spark plugs, misfiring occurs intermittently – across the entire speed range. This is caused by voltage flashovers on the spark plug neck, which in turn are down to leaking or embrittled spark plug connectors.

Solution: Before changing a spark plug (smooth or grooved), coat the spark plug neck sparingly with BERU special grease. Important: Always check the spark plug connector and, if required, replace. With regard to single and double-spark ignition coils with mounted plugs, in particular, it is advisable to replace the plugs along with the spark plugs – as the latter frequently become embrittled in the spark plug's sealing area and as a result start to leak.

Third: Tighten and observe tightening torque during the process

Spark plugs must be tightened to the correct torque, excessive torque can damage the plug, insufficient torque results in poor sealing and heat build up.

Attention: The threads on almost all BERU spark plugs are nickel-plated. In this way seizing of the spark plug in the cylinder head is reliably prevented. Thus, under no circumstances oil or grease the thread!

Fitting with a torque wrench:

First screw in spark plug by hand as far as possible with BERU fitting tool. Then turn further to the value set using a torque wrench.
