Fan components for cooling on demand - fan clutches, fan wheels and fan clutch kits

The range of applications for fan components is diverse: They are used in cars, transporters, commercial vehicles, busses, construction and agricultural vehicles with longitudinally installed engines as well as in industrial engines. BERU provides a broad range of fan clutches, fan wheels and fan clutch kits for cars, transporters and trucks from BorgWarner.

The fan components are just a part of the comprehensive original equipment range of the BorgWarner group that supplies leading automobile and commercial vehicle manufacturers since 1957.

BERU Systems offers more than 130 OEM-quality, fuel-saving, low noise and maintenance-free electrical fans for conventional passenger car applications with transversely mounted engines.

The original equipment customers include e.g. Audi, BMW, DAF Trucks, Ford, John Deere, Land Rover, MAN, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Puch, Renault, Seat, Skoda, Volvo and VW.

The function

In car, truck, agricultural and industrial engines, the regulation of cooling air-streams by means of fans and fan drives has an important role to play. Particularly under heavy load, fans ensure that the temperature of the cooling water remains within the optimum range and that the engine does not overheat.

Two discs rotate above one another, whereby their ridges and grooves engage one another without making contact. One disc (primary disc = clutch) is driven by the engine; the other (secondary disc = housing) is connected to the fan and can rotate freely.

The speed, at which the fan wheel rotates, is determined by the fan clutch, also referred to as the Visco clutch. Should the fan wheel rotate at unusually frequent intervals or make noticeable noises, this is an indicator of a possible fault and may necessitate an urgent replacement of the fan clutch.

The control of the Visco clutch is implemented, depending on the manufacturer or type, by a bimetal or electronic VISCTRONIC® control developed by BorgWarner. This refinement of the Visco clutch is electronically controlled by the engine management and features a significantly shorter reaction time.

The control attached to the front of the fan clutch responds to the temperature of the air-stream, opening and closing a valve inside the clutch. If no cooling air is required, the Visco clutch switches off and runs at a lower speed. If the requirement increases, a special silicon oil flows from the reservoir into the workspace. There, with the help of fluid friction, the drive torque is transferred to the fan without wear. If the valve closes, the silicon oil runs back, friction decreases, and the fan once again rotates freely.
